In March 2016 I moved to New Jersey to start my new job. If I had been given the free choice of which state I’d wanted to move to, I probably never would’ve considered living in New Jersey.
Unfortunately, the Garden State is very underrated. The first thing that came to my mind when I heard New Jersey was the “Jersey Shore” TV show. Luckily, real life in New Jersey is far from what’s shown on television (even though it’s totally possible to follow Snooki’s footsteps if you wish). New Jersey is such a beautiful state which I’ve learned to love and call my home.
Here are 6 reasons why I love living in New Jersey:
Fall is one of the most beautiful seasons here in New Jersey. The trees are changing their colors into shiny red, orange and yellow. Some days the temperatures are still so warm that you could be outside only wearing a t-shirt, no need for a sweater or pullover. As I’m writing this, we are beginning November and my winter coat is still in the closet. I hope I won’t need it for a while. This is the perfect time for walks in the woods, bike tours and strolling around beautiful New Jersey state parks.
New Jersey has beautiful beaches and cute beach towns. Who wouldn’t love to feel like they’re on vacation every single weekend?! There’s a beach for every type of person: family beaches, party beaches with Tiki Bars and beaches that are a little less crowded and perfect to hang out, read a book and relax. In the summer, beach towns are full of life with many visitors and tourists. There are lots of restaurants, shops and entertainment right on the boardwalks, so you can easily spend a complete day by the beach without getting hungry or bored.
Free Summer Activities
There are lots of free and low cost summer activities available in the shore towns. From music and food festivals, concerts and arts & crafts markets to bond fires on the beach, open air movie screenings and fireworks, there’s always something exciting going on and often it doesn’t even cost a dime!
You don’t have to pump your own gas
Let me re-phrase: You are not allowed to pump your own gas. Either way, it is awesome not having to touch the gas nozzles (Hi, fellow germophobes!) and just stay in the warmth and coziness of your car, especially in the winter. New Jersey is just one of two states where pumping your own gas is illegal and can only be done by professional gas pumpers. I find this very enjoyable!
New Jersey is located perfectly close to New York City and Philadelphia. I live the perfect distance away from these cities – I can always get there within 1 ½ hours, but I don’t have the crazy city life around me on a day-to-day basis. Also Washington, Baltimore and Boston are not too far away and easily reachable by car or public transportation – All definitely worth a visit!
New Jersey has its own little Las Vegas
If you want to get the Las Vegas experience but don’t want to fly all the way to the West Coast, visit Atlantic City! It’s a fun town with an entertaining boardwalk, beautiful beach and of course lots of casinos. Each casino makes you feel like you are in a completely different world. The Tropicana for example has a little Havana-themed town with restaurants, cafes and shops inside. If you’re in the mood for a tropical beach party, visit Harrah’s “The Pool”. There’s so much more to Atlantic City than just gambling.
There you have it! New Jersey is a pretty awesome place to live!
